Microsoft sets a critical deadline: Starting March 31, 2026, the default settings for Azure Virtual Networks will change fundamentally. Infrastructure-as-Code templates must be urgently updated to avoid service disruptions.
Breaking Changes in VNet Defaults
The new default settings affect core network components:
- Subnet masking: New default ranges for automatic subnets
- Security groups: More restrictive default rules
- DNS configuration: Changed name resolution defaults
- Routing tables: New standard routes for inter-subnet communication
IaC Templates Under Time Pressure
Companies must overhaul their Terraform, ARM, and Bicep templates before the deadline. Particularly affected are:
- Multi-region deployments: Complex network topologies
- Hybrid cloud setups: VPN and ExpressRoute configurations
- Legacy applications: Hardcoded network dependencies
CloudFuel warns in a LinkedIn post about the impact on production workloads. Many companies have overlooked the deadline or underestimate the effort required for migration.
Microsoft offers migration tools, but complex enterprise setups require manual adjustments. The tight deadline puts IT teams under enormous time pressure.
