Oracle Cuts 30,000 Jobs in One Day -- AI Data Centers Consume Jobs

On March 31, 2026, Oracle triggered one of the largest layoff waves in recent tech history. Estimates suggest up to 30,000 employees worldwide lost their jobs -- approximately 12,000 of them in India. The terminations came via email, often at 6 AM local time, without prior conversations with HR or managers.

What Happened

Affected employees reported on Reddit that their Slack accounts were deactivated within hours. "No goodbye, just deactivated Slack accounts," wrote one user in the r/employeesOfOracle subreddit. On r/developersIndia it said: "Bloodbath today in India. Everyone who got laid off got a letter around 6am without a 1-1 call with HR or managers."

Why

Oracle is ramping up massive investments in AI data centers and cloud infrastructure. The restructuring costs for fiscal year 2026 amount to up to 2.1 billion dollars according to Fortune India -- primarily for severance packages. The money is flowing instead into GPU clusters and OCI expansion (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure).

Severance

US employees receive four weeks of base salary for the first year of employment plus one week per additional year, capped at 26 weeks, according to Business Insider. In Seattle, a regulatory filing was submitted for 491 job cuts, effective June 1.

The Question

Oracle is simultaneously investing hundreds of billions in AI data centers -- including as part of a 500-billion-dollar infrastructure project. Whether the AI pivot generates the revenue to justify the workforce reduction is the central question. Analysts are divided.
