In brief: CXMT says its fifth-generation DRAM platform and two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X products are in mass production. Disclosures establish density and geometry, but not independent performance or yield. The move matters strategically, yet does not establish technical parity with Samsung, SK Hynix or Micron.
What CXMT disclosed
Reuters reports that CXMT gives an 11.95-nanometre spacing for key memory-cell features, achieved through quadruple patterning. The method repeats lithography steps to form finer patterns. It unveiled two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X variants in different packages for smartphones and other mobile devices; both are reportedly in production, storing 50% more data than CXMT's previous 16-gigabit equivalents.
CXMT also claims at least 50% more gross dies per wafer for its fifth platform versus the fourth, using an 8-gigabit reference design. Gross dies count potential chip areas before defective units are removed. The figure therefore does not prove a 50% yield increase and says little by itself about sellable volume or cost.
Pandorex Analysis
The 11.95-nanometre spacing is a concrete feature measurement, not a standardised cross-vendor process node. CXMT's claim that it matches the most advanced production nodes cannot be tested without speed, power, die-area and yield data. Quadruple patterning is not a free substitute for finer lithography either: additional masking and alignment steps increase process-control demands.
A 24-gigabit die is meaningful. With the same chip count, it can enable 50% more capacity than a 16-gigabit die. Density alone does not establish product parity: Micron specifies up to 10.7Gbps for current LPDDR5X and labels its power figures as internal lab results; Samsung also advertises up to 10.7Gbps and identifies its figures as internal tests. No comparable CXMT data is public for speed, voltage, package height, qualification or real yield.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: under export restrictions, CXMT has moved a denser DRAM platform and 24-gigabit mobile chips into mass production. That expands China's domestic memory base. Customer qualifications and independent product data must show whether it produces technically and economically equivalent volume products.
