Microsoft filing proposes vector messages between AI agents

AI agents could pass information directly as numerical vectors instead of turning it into text for one another. Microsoft describes this approach in application US20260339761A1, published on October 29, 2026. Its objective is to reduce meaning lost and processing steps added when multiple agents exchange information.

Check the format before sending

Each agent registers the embedding model it uses. Embeddings are lists of numbers representing content within a model's space. A communication layer checks whether sender and recipient use compatible representations. If they do, it forwards the message unchanged. Otherwise, an adapter would map vectors between the spaces. One described implementation trains a hypernetwork to learn mappings between representations of similar concepts. Claim 1 describes message transport, claim 6 covers the mapping between spaces, and claim 20 specifies this hypernetwork implementation.

No translator for arbitrary models

The practical difficulty is compatibility. Different dimensions, training data or model architectures can make representations incompatible. Paragraphs 0038–0044 therefore provide for registration and checks for available transformations. If no suitable conversion exists, or the recipient cannot be reached, the system returns an error. It does not promise an automatically working connection between arbitrary models.

Our assessment: The filing moves part of agent communication from generated sentences into mathematical representations. That could avoid repeatedly composing and interpreting text. Whether the important information survives those transfers would still require measurement. The document provides no comparative benchmarks for semantic fidelity, latency or energy consumption. It establishes neither universal lossless translation nor an available product or public access to internal model states.

Document status, checked October 31, 2026: The applicant is Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC. US application 19/189,999 was filed on April 25, 2025; the document identifies no earlier priority. Its A1 publication does not establish a patent grant. We could not independently confirm any subsequent prosecution status.
