Samsung Application Measures Wafer Misalignment Through Test Contacts

Published Pandorex Redaktion·3 min read

In brief: Lateral misalignment can disrupt contacts between two bonded wafers. Samsung's application US20260344506A1, published on October 29, describes additional test contacts intended to reveal such errors. Their current pattern provides a direction and a stepped estimate of displacement. The publication supplies no fabrication measurements.

Misalignment makes the test contacts conduct

The test contacts are deliberately offset. With correct alignment, they remain separate. If a wafer shifts, an upper contact overlaps particular lower contacts. A test circuit switches through the pairs sequentially and measures current. A reference value distinguishes weak leakage current from the stronger current produced by contact. Which contacts conduct indicates the direction of displacement.

Multiple test cells have different gaps. If cells with gaps R1 and R2 conduct while R3 remains separate, for example, the pattern provides a stepped displacement estimate within the intended measurement range. Description paragraphs [0051]–[0052] and [0099]–[0117] explain the method. Claims 1 and 11 address the contact arrangement; claims 18–20 cover the test procedure. The publication describes potential feedback for the bonding process, without demonstrating automatic repair of wafers already bonded together.

The application on record

The applicant is Samsung Electronics. “Misalign Detection Circuit and Method of Operating the Same” was filed as US application 19/468,457 on February 3, 2026. Korean priority 10-2025-0053823 dates from April 24, 2025. A1 denotes an application publication. We could not independently confirm the current official prosecution status on October 31, 2026.

Pandorex View: Test conditions determine the value

For stacked memory, the current pattern could help detect misalignment at a buried contact interface. The chosen gaps define the measurement steps. Evidence of nanometer resolution, higher yield or production integration is absent. Practical evaluation would need to examine leakage, contact variability and how well individual test regions represent the bonded interface. Our assessment concerns the fresh publication; it does not constitute a complete novelty assessment.
