NVIDIA proposes automatic data-source descriptions for AI agents

NVIDIA describes a method intended to help AI agents find suitable data collections. Published on September 10, 2026, application US20260267897A1 generates concise source descriptions. Its unusual starting point is a query made entirely of zeros.

Describe the collection before searching it

A zero vector queries a collection stored as vector embeddings. A language model summarizes the returned subset. If it exceeds the context window, the model processes smaller sections and condenses their summaries. An agent then uses these descriptions to select sources for a user question. The method supports RAG: answering with additionally retrieved documents. Claims 1–7 describe the query, summarization and selection steps.

Assessment: Less upkeep does not mean neutral sampling

The potential benefit is less manual maintenance of data catalogs. What matters, however, is whether descriptions also capture small or rarely queried topics. Otherwise, an agent could overlook a suitable source before the actual search begins.

Our technical assessment: Removing semantic content from a query does not guarantee a representative sample. The returned documents still depend on the vector representation and search method. The application describes its approach as unbiased, but the reviewed passages contain no comparative measurement supporting that assertion. They also do not establish lower costs or better answers.

Document status, checked September 12: a published US application by NVIDIA Corporation, filed August 20, 2025, as 19/304,737. It claims priority to US provisional application 63/768,550 of March 7, 2025. The A1 publication establishes neither a grant nor a product launch.
