Bosch Patents ADAS for Motorcycles: Adaptive Cruise Control and Rider Assistance for Two-Wheelers

In the week of February 8, 2026, Bosch received two patents that bring advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to motorcycles and scooters: US12539855 (Motorcycle Platoon Cruise Control) and US12539845 (Straddle-Vehicle Rider Assistance). They were part of an AV-dominated week in which 7 of the top 10 patents concerned autonomous or semi-autonomous driving.

US12539855: Adaptive Cruise Control for Motorcycle Platoons

The patent describes an adaptive cruise control system specifically developed for motorcycles in group riding (platoon). Unlike car systems, the system must:

  • Account for the lateral position of the motorcycle within the group (staggered riding)
  • Calculate group-specific distances (motorcycle distances differ from car distances)
  • Anticipate the behavior of other group members

US12539845: Rider Assistance for Straddle Vehicles

The second patent addresses more general assistance functions for "straddle-type vehicles" — motorcycles, scooters, e-scooters. It describes systems for stability control, brake assistance, and warning systems that account for two-wheeler-specific dynamics (lean angle, weight shifting).

Legal Uncharted Territory

Motorcycle ADAS is legally complex. Existing AV regulation (ISO 26262, UL 4600) was written for enclosed passenger vehicles. For two-wheelers, there are open questions:

  • Rider Override: When and how can the rider override the system? On a motorcycle, override has different physical implications than in a car
  • Liability in Group Riding: Who is liable when the adaptive cruise control fails in a platoon — the manufacturer of the system or the rider of the preceding motorcycle?
  • Regulatory Framework: It is unclear whether existing AV regulations are even applicable to motorcycles

Market Strategy

Bosch is already the market leader in motorcycle ABS and stability control systems (MSC). The ADAS patents are a natural extension — and target the growing market for premium motorcycles and electric scooters.

The patents position Bosch to dominate the nascent two-wheeler ADAS market before regulatory frameworks are established. Whoever holds patents first often defines the technical standard that later regulation is based on.
